Queer sport and music in Berlin
Berlin has many queer sports clubs and music groups, open to (almost) everyone. Here are the ones whose description we could check. The list is not exhaustive; check their websites before you go.
Sport
Vorspiel. Berlin’s queer sports club, founded on 11 November 1986 and open to young and old. It offers 40 sports in five families: ball and racket sports, water, combat and relaxation, strength and fitness, dance and health, from women’s volleyball to gay football, from swimming to tai chi. It turns 40 in 2026. More details, all the sports and membership.
Berlin Bruisers. Queer rugby club founded in 2012 by Dave Egan, the first of its kind in Germany. It has a men’s team, a FLINTA* team (rugby sevens) and a mixed touch rugby team. It is first and foremost queer, but open to anyone interested in rugby. Its documentary Tackling Life won the Audience Award at Dok.fest München 2018 and was shown at the Berlinale 2019. Since 2014 it has hosted the Bash About tournament every two years.
Seitenwechsel. Sports club for women, lesbians, trans and inter people, and girls. We could not check more details; see their website for sports and times.
Music
Männer-Minne. Gay men’s choir, described as Berlin’s biggest gay choir, active since 1987, with about 40 singers. Its repertoire runs from musical and comedy to pop and rock, with heavily choreographed shows. In 1988 it organised the 4th European gay and lesbian choir festival and in 2001 helped organise Various Voices in Berlin; it plans to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2027.
Rosacavaliere. Berlin men’s choir founded in 1990, about 15 singers, with a repertoire between classical and pop (including a Queen medley).
Homophilharmonisches Orchester (Concentus alius). Amateur orchestra for LGBT musicians in Berlin, modelled on the London Gay Symphony Orchestra. In 2024 it celebrated its 25th anniversary with Mahler’s Second Symphony, played with twelve amateur choirs to a sold-out hall, conducted by Christiane Silber.
